Social space

The quilt is coming along. With the addition of more squares and the film projector, the studio space has an increasingly social feeling. Because I have more things spread out across more surfaces, there are more places for people to go look, rather than being clustered around one table where I am working.

I’ve had a number of fun visitors…. a woman from the US State department, a group from the Philadelphia Museum, and Master Printer Judith Solodkin of Solo Impression(also an incredible hat-maker, see picture above), with whom I was lucky enough to work with on a recent print project.

One visitor stayed with me for four hours… last week Lucy de Kooning, an 8th grader at Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School, helped me sew film squares as part of a school assignment to work with an artist on an issue related to recycling and sustainability. First Lucy went through a few films and cut them into 8 inch strips, then she and I worked together to choose strips that went well together. Finally she sewed them into squares. Lucy’s a fast learner, and an engaging person, so I’m hoping she comes back in to work with me again.
