The Day is Two Feet Long, 2009

Dear Lucy came to the museum again to work with me. I had her cut and sort my films into different colored piles, to make working on a second film quilt easier.

She was continually surprised by how much film I have. I explained to her how 24 still frames= 1 second of moving image, so 30 minutes of film = many feet. She was cutting the films into 7 inch strips, and we tried to calculate how many minutes of film were represented in all the little piles she had created.

We talked about how much time it took to cut and sew all the films together, what a slow process it is, and the difference between the time represented by the film and the experience of time actually cutting.

Because of our conversation, I decided to title my finished quilt “The Day is Two Feet Long,” after the film I cut up of the same name, which is about the subjectivity and passage of time.

    hello. 24 frames equals one second of moving image indeed. i used to shoot super 8 kodak film. interesting blog. i enjoyed it. new york and mad is a blast. :) have a nice day.
