In my new position as Manager of School, Youth and Family Programs at MAD, I was very excited to host a professional development seminar for New York City Teachers on November 3, 2009. Béatrice Coron, one of the artists from Slash: Paper Under the Knife led an interactive discussion and hands-on-workshop for teachers. Thirty-seven teachers, across disciplines, grade levels and throughout the metropolitan area, attended both morning seminar and afternoon workshop held in the Museum’s special event space with views overlooking Central Park and Columbus Circle. Teachers were excited to engage with an artist from the exhibition and to learn paper cutting techniques that they could then take back to their classrooms to share with students. Teachers commented on Béatrice Coron’s accessibility and generosity. She shared a plethora of information on the tradition of paper cutting, techniques, films, artists, books, stencils and projects. During a MADLab with students from a local high school discussed the site specific artworks of Andrea Mastrovito, Mia Pearlman, and Béatrice Coron with artist educator Rachel Miller.
Students and Rachel Miller discussed and explored the relationships between the artworks, the architectural space that it occupies, as well as how the artwork can become an extension of space and vice versa. The students were then assigned to use their bodies as the “site,” and to design and construct a 3-dimensional work of wearable of art as the “specific”, using only newspaper and tape to support, hold, suspend, as well as extend from their bodies.
Lincoln Center Institute continues to be an important partner with MAD, with sixty student teachers from Brooklyn College, twenty-five adult students, and twenty educators using the galleries, classroom and public program’s room for teaching, breakout sessions and educator workshops this past month.
Save the date: January 9th, for our pilot family program Mad Saturdays. Our first Mad Saturday will focus on the exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife, where youngsters and their adult companions will explore the galleries, watch films, and use paper cutting, burning, tearing techniques inspired by the films and Slash to make cut-outs, pop-ups and silhouettes.

The Teacher Professional Development Day was tremendous fun. Not only was Beatrice Coron’s artwork amazing but she showed us easy ways to use paper to produce wonderful positive/negative pictures and action pop ups.
It was a pleasure talking to teachers who had travelled from New York, Long Island, and New Jersey. Everyone had great ideas how they could apply these new skills in their classrooms.
I look forward to the next one in February 2010.

As an artist educator here at MAD, it was nice to get an opportunity to talk to teachers (all of them I think were art teachers) about different types of lessons they have conducted in their art classes using paper. Also, Beatrice offered ideas for many hands-on activities that could be used for students of all ages at the museum.
