On January 9, MAD’s new program initiative, MAD Family Day, took off in full swing. With the help of artists in open studios, museum staff, interns, and volunteers, we had an amazingly successful day of fun and learning. The atmosphere was alive with excitement as children and adults took part in museum activities that consisted of art making workshops in our special events space. Four separate activity stations (magic carpets) were set up where families engaged in workshops facilitated by author Esther K Smith and our museum educators, Cathy Rosamond, Chio Flores and Kate Fauvell, making pop ups, hand-made books and theatre sets, crowns, head dresses and jewelry, silhouettes and narratives. The open studios were alive with art making where Sarah Abramson facilitated her own workshop of paper jewelry pins, and Itamar Jobani held discussions and demonstrations with adults and children alike; our amazing Docents, Carol Cohen, Gillie Holme, Sarah and Duane Jonker-Burke lead interactive tours in the exhibition, Slash: Paper Under the Knife; families watched paper cut animated films in the theater and public programs room by artists Rob Carter, Annie Poon, Tomoko Oguchi and Michel Ocelot. To add to the excitement, artists/directors Annie Poon, Tomoko Oguchi and crew were on hand in the theater to discuss the process of making their films. We look forward to future MAD Family Day programming and fun!
Special thanks to our volunteers and interns: Ilaria Rodella, Stacy Mars, Genesis Nunez, and Michael Sheffey, and to our museum educator Dess Kelley who although was not physically on hand to partake in the days events, whose presence was felt through all her hard work in preparation for the event. A special thanks to Molly MacFadden, education assistant, for all of her assistance and assuring that everything ran smoothly.

It was so fun having the kids come up to the stage after the screening and showing them the paper cutouts from our animations! They were so eager and excited to touch the drawings and see the tiny cutout characters. What a fun and memorable activity
Thanks to all the parents for bringing them out.

What a great day for everyone. I knew the event was a great success when at one point I had several children surrounding me, tapping on my shoulders and pulling my arms in several directions! There were people spilling out of the magic carpet! Many parents joined in and learned how to make pop-ups as well, and I had few art teachers who took the initiative on a Saturday to come and learn new techniques/projects.
Cathleen, the manager of school, youth and family programs thanked everyone on this blog, but the biggest applause goes to Cathleen herself!
The only downside for me was that I was on the 7th floor the whole time so I missed the short film screening. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to see them one day.
