Phyllis Kudder Sullivan’s “Vortices” are Exhibited at the Lois Lambert Gallery

Many of my pieces currently on exhibit at the Lois Lambert Gallery in Santa Monica (1/9/10-2/20/10) were made, right here, in Open Studios.

In this body of work, Vortices, I continue the inward-looking theme of “world within worlds” by interlacing clay coils into double-walled vessel forms.  This is an architectonic approach to the vessel that allows me to explore the subtle nuances of the hidden, hollow, inner volume, a requisite characteristic of both the clay container and architecture.  The open “weave” of the organic grid creates visual access into the energized inner spaces, addressing issues of fragility and strength, density and porosity and conveying the concept of containment while blurring the boundaries between in and out.
