Radical Departure and Quiet Evolution

During my two sessions in MAD’s Open Studios Program I have enjoyed lengthy conversations with artists who were visiting the museum. Many of them inquired about the nature of such a public residency and my ability to get work done with constant interruptions. In actuality, I have been pleased at the body of work that I have been able to produce since May. I’ve used my time at MAD to launch an interactive project (see previous blogs for information about the Penelope Project) and to continue work on my Vortex Series.
The Penelope Project, an installation work that focuses on the theme of inter-connectedness, is a radical departure from previous gallery work. Although it covers approximately 35 square feet of floor space it does not feel complete to me. It may be a project that I continue when my residency has ended.
I began the double-walled vessels of my Vortex Series in September 2005. They are a continuation of the preceding Spiral Series in which I explored the concept of world- within-worlds. Over the past eight months at MAD the Vortex Series has undergone a quiet evolution. Development can be measured in small increments as I moved from symmetrical forms that referenced Native American Woodland pottery to more organic, amorphous walls that call attention to the energized inner spaces that can be seen through the open grid surface of interlaced coils.
All in all, the Open Studios Program at MAD has provided the “gift of time” that characterizes the best residency programs. And there is an added advantage. Unlike other artist residencies in which I have participated, the feedback I have received from artists and visitors has helped me to define, refine and develop my concepts.
