I participated in a walk-thru and critique with the students from Bridget Malloy’s Honors and drawing class at The Beacon School. I was invited to attend the tour, but; since I was there I participated in the dialogue. The exhibition at Beacon was inspired by their recent visit to MAD to see the exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife. The Beacon work is ambitious, well executed, sometimes political, sometimes beautiful and very inventive. All of the work, done with paper, looked at the exhibition for inspiration. These students observed how the artists in the exhibition constructed their artwork using paper, and set out to make their own installation and sculpture that used paper as a medium. They observed how the artists in the exhibition made certain decisions about space and architecture to install the work. Using Slash as a point of departure, the students used paper as a vehicle, and made it all about their ideas and style. It was great to see how much they gained from their visit at MAD, not to duplicate the work, but instead to make certain observations about intent.
It was great to see the work and participate in the discussion.
