In conjunction with the exhibition Bespoke: The HandBuilt Bicycle, the Brooklyn based Bamboo Bike Studio worked in MAD’s Open Studio during MAD Saturday: Family Day. The artist’s from the studio worked with India Salvor Menuez a student from City-As-School in Manhattan to construct a bicycle frame from Bamboo. Visitors were invited to participate by discussing the creative process and the studio’s interest in sustainable alternative transportation. The Bamboo Bike Studio and India worked 8 hour days over the course of the weekend to complete their custom bike. The Bamboo Bike Studio will be back at the Museum on June 19-20th and July 17-18th working with more high school students from around New York. Check out the Bamboo Bike’s previous student visit here.

India Here, just to say how amazing it was to participate in this project!
It was so empowering to learn the process of building my own bike. I couldn’t be more excited, not only for a summer of riding ahead of me but also to be able to ride myself to school everyday next year. The opportunity of such an amazing bicycle now frees me from a constantly failing metro system as well as the god forbidding idea of riding a car in this city. To also know I will be promoting the cause of the Bamboo Bike studio is just the cherry on top.
Thanks again to everyone at MAD and the Bamboo Bike studio for making this happen!
Sincerely,
India
