Portfolio Development Workshop @ MAD

This past week at MAD I had the opportunity to participate in and assist with a 3-day Portfolio Development workshop. High School students from the Gotham Professional Arts Academy in Brooklyn participated in this program as part of the MADLab Summer Art Camp series. The students worked with an artist-educator to create and organize successful portfolios.

On day 1 we discussed the important and vital elements that each portfolio should contain. Students studied examples of successful portfolios and learned that each portfolio should expose both their technical ability as artists as well as their creativity. On Day 2 students learned to write their own artist’sstatements using the statements of professional artists in the Museum as examples and inspiration. Later in the day we had the special privilege to meet with three of MAD’s curators: David McFadden, Lowery Sims, and Dorothy Globus. Each participants had the opportunity to have their artwork and artist statements critiqued by the curators. The curators also provided the students with helpful advice for their portfolios and college applications. On Day 3 the students learned to photograph their 3-D and 2-D work. They experimented with angles, lighting, and framing in order to compose successful and accurate photographs.
