Having Fun at the Arts of Pacific Asia Show

Last Thursday I treated myself to an hour of serious eye candy at the New York Arts of Pacific Asia Show as an end to a fun and frenzied Asia Week.  Galleries from all over the world turned up to show off their wares from Japan, China, the Himalayan region and more to crowds of eager collectors and enthusiasts. Each booth revealed inspiring works of art in a dizzying array of colors, materials and forms.

Some of the more intriguing works were found at the Cavin-Morris booth (their gallery is based in Chelsea). You may remember the earlier review I did of their show, Yugen in Contemporary Art. I was pleased to see many familiar sculptures and works of fiber art in their booth, making them one of the few contemporary galleries represented at the fair.

For those more interested in the traditional arts of Asia, dealers put their best foot forward with gorgeous lacquer, intricate works of silver and delicately rendered snuff bottles.

Below, you can see some of the Japanese pieces that I found most striking:

Silver Tea and Coffee Set from Flying Crane Antiques

A brilliant work of fiber art from Miyamoto Japanese Textiles

I hope some of you got to visit the Arts of Pacific Asia Show and saw these works of art yourselves! The show ends Sunday, but if you still feel hungry for beautiful Japanese design, check out MAD’s Beauty in All Things show, up through June.
