Lebron James and his missing foot

King James by Don Porcella, pipe cleaners, 2010.

On July 08, 2010, Lebron James, the basketball superstar, decided to take his talents to South Beach. In a now famous public announcement, Lebron James decided to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers (his home team) and go play for the Miami Heat. At that time I just happened to be finishing a pipe cleaner sculpture of Lebron James’ foot. It was the third foot in a series of feet that I had made.

My first foot was of Michael Jordan, complete with his signature shoe. My second foot was named after Kobe Bryant and the third foot was for the next heir apparent, Lebron James. The Cleveland area discovered my completed art work and decided to post something about it on their website for all the Cleveland sports fans to see.

As the artist, it was a matter of perfect timing and a little bit of luck that I finished the foot right when Lebron James signed with the Miami Heat. The sculpture that I made struck a chord with the Cleveland fans and my art symbolized how the Cleveland fans felt when Lebron James left Cleveland for Miami.

My hope is that Lebron returns to Cleveland someday and plays for the Cavaliers and that he purchases this sculpture as a reminder that you can’t leave your hometown with everything intact. You can see this sculpture every Tuesday at the Museum of Arts and Design on the 6th floor in the Open Studio Program. See the CleveScene post here.
