Must-Have Manual for “Terrarists” Everywhere

terrarist {n}: a person who make terrariums with enthusiasm and pride

Tiny World Terrariums hits bookshelves around the city this week; a brand new step-by-step guide to creating tiny green worlds for anyone (whether green-thumbed or not). Written by the creators of Twig Terrariums in Brooklyn, Michelle Inciarrano & Katy Maslow distilled their experience into clear guidelines for this comprehensive book. Their clever tips make it simple to balance the delicate ecosystems in terrarium composition and maintenance, from selecting glass containers to layering soil and filtration to adding moss, succulents and other plants. Michelle and Katy’s cheeky sense of humor shines in written form; the text captures their unique attitude of equal parts enthusiasm and irreverence. There are 100 color photographs by Robert Wright, many of which are featured below. Tiny World Terrariums is an indispensable resource for all urban growers, perfectly timed for spring fever.

You may remember Twig Terrariums from their time in the Open Studios last August, presented in response to the exhibition Otherworldly. The Twig ladies rightly say, “no matter where you live, terrariums are therapeutic to create and peaceful to observe.” But there’s more to their work than tranquil verdant compositions, Twig takes it further. The quirky, personal touches added by Michelle & Katy make their scenes magical. As voyeurs, we observe tiny figures from the distant outside. Moving from terrarium to terrarium, the viewer/voyeur experiences a wide range of emotional reactions. We see things we shouldn’t see, or maybe don’t want to see. The collision is quietly contained in lush green moss, creating a reality twice removed- these scenes are not our world, nor is it theirs.

Twig has come a long way since their work in the Open Studios. In addition to their first book, they’ve exponentially expanded the business. Michelle and Katy jokingly refer to their former studio as “gimp house” in comparison to their headquarters on Third Avenue in Gowanus, which is already “overgrown.”  Plans are underway to move again- just across the street to an even bigger spot with choice storefront windows. The need to expand became clear when the launch party for Tiny World Terrariums packed the shop, spilling out into the back porch where psychic readings were performed under giant artificial leaves, setting up participants as figures within in their own mini-scape. The Twig ladies signed books and applied temporary tattoos while guests enjoyed refreshments (including bright green dry ice punch) and browsed through shelves and shelves of miniature worlds.
