Studio in a Time Capsule

Erica Rosenfeld‘s Ladies of Ellendale, Cake of the Month Club, 1953 is an installation inspired by a vintage photograph Erica found. It is from her Time Capsule series, in which photos and objects are displayed in bell jars. Part of the installation is in the collection of the Museum of Arts and Design. It turns out that her studio is just as much of a time capsule, filled with photos, vintage finds, and beautiful glass disks and objects that Erica makes herself.

Ladies Cake Club Necklace

The piece in MAD’s collection includes a necklace, which can be taken out and worn. The necklace is made of glass disks, some of which contain images from old photos. The disks get sewn into a necklace form.

The rest of the objects in the glass time capsules come from Erica’s vast collection of vintage objects. Displaying things in her studio allows for creation of an imagined narrative- 0ne can revisit certain objects or arrangements to make up stories. What has happened to these objects and how they relate to each other? Who did they belong to? Erica says, “I am fascinated by the things (both spiritual and physical) that people cling to in order to find – and define – ‘identity.’  How do we choose what we see? How does this affect what we remember?”

The Time Capsule series are also part of the furnishings in Erica’s apartment – naturally, along with vintage furniture. If you are interested in seeing more, her apartment is also a bed and breakfast on Airbnb.
