Museum Tech: Fun with Webcams

The Museum Tech series offers insight and instruction on making technology work for museums. This project has a difficulty rating of: no problem. Last Saturday, Jessica in the Education Department arranged for Second Lives artist Long-Bin Chento work in our sixth floor artist studios. The problem: Long-Bin carves phone books with a band saw, sanders […]

Gallery Night with Second Lives Artists

We had our inaugural public program at 2 Columbus Circle last night: 5 artists from our exhibition Second Lives joined Chief Curator David McFadden and Curator Lowery Sims in the galleries for discussion on their works. A good crowd turned out to listen, look, and ask questions. For those who don’t know, MAD offers public […]

Day 2

By any measure, yesterday’s Grand Opening was a great success. Around 4000 people came through the door; we had a capacity crowd with a line around the block for most of the (rainy) day. Can we repeat yesterday’s accomplishment? Will even more people decide to come check out the new museum? Will the entire museum […]

And finally presenting….

At the beginning of last year, our chief curator David McFadden put up a calendar. He began to count down from 500-something. Over the past 20 months, the days have been ticked off as exhibitions were organized, plans were made, and our building was put together. I’d like to think that the first thing David […]

Chase Education Exploration Day

As a cap to our preview week, we've invited educators from across New York and beyond to the museum for a sneak peak of our education facilities. In case you didn't know, our entire 6th floor is devoted to educational and working spaces: a 35-seat classroom, 3 working studios, and a seminar room, all with fantastic views. School groups will be able to come to the museum, view the galleries, and then come to the classroom space for art-making activities based on what was seen and learned.

MAD GRAND OPENING!

Ok, so we’ve been a little remiss in posting to the blog. We have a good excuse: the Museum of Arts and Design opens to the public on Saturday, September 27th, and there were one or two last minute things that we’ve been working on over the past few weeks. Here’s a sneak peak at […]

Museum Visits and Assessment

As public school teachers, with all the assessment deadlines, how were you able to utilize museums this year? Did the testing affect how often you take class trips?

in the studio: Paul Villinski

I had the chance to visit Paul’s studio with MAD chief curator David McFadden a few weeks back to talk to him about his background, about his work and about his process. This video is the result: His piece for our Second Lives exhibition is going to be really cool. I highly recommend coming to […]

Artist Paul Villinski

You should check out MAD’s media page for the new video on artist Paul Villinski – coming soon. http://madmuseum.org/INTERACT/media.aspx The LA Times published a story on Paul Villinski today, who is one of the featured artists in Second Lives – an opening exhibition at MAD’S new home on Columbus Circle for the fall 2008. Our […]

Deinstallation Video

Better late than never, here’s a nice video to complement Elayne’s post on deinstallation of the 40 West 53rd Street galleries. In this clip, our art handlers are removing Annet Couwenberg’s “Embroidery Penetrates” from the wall of the gallery. Thanks to Skip La Plante for allowing us to use his music – for those who […]
